How do I get a skydiving license?

The solo skydiving learning curriculum at Skydive Sussex is called the Advanced Freefall Program (AFP). Completing this is the first step toward your first skydiving license, which will allow you to jump on your own and with other licensed skydivers.

AFP is an accredited United States Parachute Association (USPA) training program designed to teach students how to skydive using various learning techniques throughout a structured course outline. You can complete the AFP program and jump your own parachute without assistance in as few as ten jumps!

This program not only trains you to jump with a parachute system designed for solo use, but also equips you with the skills to earn your skydiving license, allowing you to make independent solo jumps or join licensed friends for group skydives.

How does the training work?

Phase 1: Learning the Foundations.

Phase 1 starts with three tandem skydives to introduce you to freeall and some initial freefall skills, such as body position, altitude awareness, and parachute flight.

Once your tandems are complete, you’ll take comprehensive ground training (6-8 hours) to prepare you for your upcoming solo skydives.

Then its back into the air for a series of seven skydives wearing your own parachute, with an instructor joining you in freefall to instruct and supervise.

By the time you complete the seventh level of the program, you will be able to perform a multitude of aircraft exits, complete novice freefall maneuvers, and fly your parachute to landing.

Phase 2: Refine those skills!

For Phase 2, you’ll work to build your confidence and refine your freefall skills through solo jumps, coached freefall, and parachute exercises.

The skills you develop during this phase will prepare you for the requirements of the United States Parachute Federation “A” license.

Some of these requirements include completing a minimum of 25 freefalls, and learning to pack your main parachute and then skydiving with it, without assistance.

During your initial training phases, and as a student skydiver working towards your “A” class license, you’ll need to be sure to make at least one skydive every thirty days.

Welcome to skydiving !

Once you’ve completed Phase 1 and Phase,2 you’ll be eligible for a USPA ‘A’ license! This represents a significant milestone for new skydivers.

This license signifies a level of competence and knowledge that enables individuals to undertake autonomous jumps without direct supervision.

You’ll have learned and demonstrated skills such like proper body positioning during exit and freefall, parachute control, emergency proceudres, and adherence to safety measures. Additionally, you’ll have learnt critical decision-making skills in real-time skydiving scenarios.

Attaining your A license grants you the freedom to do solo jumps, offering the opportunity to experience the profound joy of soaring through the skies while relishing a sense of accomplishment and self-reliance!
