How Does tandem skydiving work?
Tandem skydiving is the quickest way to experience the thrill skydiving has to offer.
- Gear Up: You’ll be harnessed to a highly experienced skydiving instructor using equipment specifically designed for tandem skydiving.
- Exit altitude: Up to 14,500ft.
- Time in freefall: Up to 1 minute, smiling for the camera if you went with one of our media packages.
- Time under parachute: 5-7 minutes

What Should I Expect on my skydive?
Step 1: Check In
You’ve decided to make the leap and go for a tandem skydive – congrats! Once you arrive at Skydive Sussex, you’ll check in at the office and complete your paperwork and waivers. We’ll then show a quick video from the makers of the tandem system you will be using. You will meet your instructor about 20 minutes before you board the plane.
Step 2: Gear Up & Get Ready
Onto the next step! When you meet your instructor, they will explain the harness system and fit you with it. They will also describe what you should expect during your first tandem skydiving experience and give you a safety briefing. After you are geared up you will head out to meet the plane.
Step 3: Takeoff & Climb to Alititude
Once on board the airplane with your instructor, you will enjoy an approximately 20 minute ride to your exit altitude – up to 14,500ft. That’s over two and a half miles above the earth! On the ride up, you’ll enjoy captivating views of the NYC skyline, High Point monument, the rolling countryside, and all the beauty Northern New Jersey has to offer.
Step 4: Exit & Freefall!
Exiting the plane during a skydive is a surreal experience. The moment you leave the aircraft a sense of weightlessness occurs as gravity takes over. As you accelerate to freefall speeds of 120 MPH creating a thrilling mix of adrenaline and awe while looking at the breathtaking scenery of the earth below.
Step 5: Parachute ride & Landing
When it’s time to deploy your parachute, the next part of the skydive begins. During a scenic 5-7 minute canopy ride back to the landing zone you will literally feel on top of the world as your instructor guides you to the ground. You can wave to your family and friends waiting in the spectator area as your instructor lands the parachute system. Before your feet even touch the ground, you’ll be anticipating your next jump!

Basic Media Package
Your instructor will wear a camera on their wrist to capture video & photos of the prep, plane ride, freefall, and parachute ride from a selfie perspective.
PREMIUM Media Package
A professional photographer will join you in freefall to capture the ‘outside’ perspective of your skydive, while taking video & photos of your experience.
Ultimate Media Package
This experience covers it all! The Handcam video & photos PLUS a professional freefall photographer who will join you to film the outside’ perspective.
